COOLING FAN MOTOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION INSPECTION [SKYACTIV-G]

COOLING FAN MOTOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

Note:
The radiator shape differs depending on the period of manufacture and the servicing procedure differs. Therefore, verify the radiator shape in advance.

Steps:
1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2. Remove the front under cover No.1 and the front under cover No.2.
3. Remove the plug hole plate.
4. Remove the following parts as a single unit:
Air hose.
Air cleaner cover.
Air cleaner element.
Air cleaner case.
Fresh-air duct.
Resonance chamber.
5.  Remove or disconnect the following parts:
Bolt.
Clip.
Fastener.
Wiring harness clip.
Connector.

Cooling Fan Component Removal Note
Remove the cooling fan component from below the engine compartment.

COOLING FAN MOTOR INSPECTION
1. Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2.
2. Perform the KOEO or KOER self-test using the M-MDS and verify that none of the following DTCs is detected.
P0117:00
P0118:00
P0480:00
P0481:00
If any of the following DTCs can be verified, perform the applicable DTC inspection.
3. Verify that the engine coolant temperature is less than 97°C {206°F}, and then start the engine and idle it.
4. Verify that the cooling fan does not operate when the A/C switch is turned off.
If it is operating, perform the following inspections.

Inspection items•  Cooling fan relay No.1 (stuck closed)
•  Cooling fan relay No.2 (stuck closed)
•  Wiring harness between cooling fan relay No.1 and cooling fan motor (short to power supply)
•  Wiring harness between cooling fan relay No.2 and cooling fan motor (short to power supply)•  A/C pressure sensor
•  Climate control unit
•  CAN communication (PID: AC_REQ constantly ON)

5. Verify that the cooling fan operates at a low speed when the L_SPD_FAN is turned from OFF to ON using the M-MDS simulation function.
If the operation cannot be verified, perform the following inspections.

Cooling fan statusInspection items
OFF•  Cooling fan relay No.1 (stuck open)•  Cooling fan motor (internal open circuit)•  Wiring harnesses between battery and cooling fan relay No.1, and cooling fan relay No.1 and cooling fan motor (fuse blown due to open circuit and short to ground)•  Wiring harness between cooling fan motor and ground (open circuit and poor ground)

6.  Verify that the cooling fan operates at a high speed when the H_SPD_FAN is turned from OFF to ON using the M-MDS simulation function.
If the operation cannot be verified, perform the following inspections.

Cooling fan statusInspection items
OFF•  Cooling fan relay No.2 (stuck open)•  Cooling fan motor (internal open circuit)•  Wiring harnesses between battery and cooling fan relay No.2, and cooling fan relay No.2 and cooling fan motor (fuse blown due to open circuit and short to ground)•  Wiring harness between cooling fan motor and ground (open circuit and poor ground)
